Santa Barbara can be a great holiday destination for those who want to beat the cold of winter. We probably won’t have a white Christmas, but there are a number of festive traditions and attractions that can appeal to holiday lovers all over the country or even beyond. It helps to have a list of attractions to check out before you get started. Here are a few of our favorites going on this winter:

La Arcada Christmas Walk

La Arcada plaza is a charming shopping and dining square filled with art and character that’s uniquely Santa Barbara. It’s a great place to do some last minute Christmas shopping, but the Christmas Walk on December 4 really adds to the holiday spirit. You’ll find carolers, live music, fresh popcorn, and “lots of holiday goodies.” Santa will even make an appearance, so make sure to bring the kids to this one for photos.

Nutcracker at The Granada Theatre

From downtown Santa Barbara, the historic Granada Theatre cuts an impressive figure. The original theatre first opened almost 100 years ago in 1924, and it was restored in 2008. Today, it seats 1,500 between orchestra seats and luxurious patron lounges. You can still see the original chandelier here. But why visit it for the holidays? It’s the best place to see a live production of “The Nutcracker” in town. For those who like to take in some live theatre — or ballet — as part of their holiday traditions, this is one you can’t miss.

Los Olivos Old Fashioned Christmas

On the first Saturday of December, you can enjoy an “old fashioned Christmas” in nearby Los Olivos, a community that really highlights the wine country of the area. Here you’ll find carolers, holiday goodies, arts and crafts, and open houses. There’s something for every member of the family, no matter what their age. Santa will also make an appearance here, if you missed the opportunity to catch him at La Arcada — or the kids simply want another opportunity to see the jolly man in the red suit.

Ice in Paradise

Maybe you’re spending the holidays in Santa Barbara to visit family or maybe you want to enjoy some mild, sunny weather in the winter. But that doesn’t mean that you want to throw out all winter weather traditions altogether. Fortunately, you don’t have to! Check out the Ice in Paradise skating rink in Goleta with your family, your significant other, or just bring yourself for an opportunity to learn to skate. There’s also a holiday ice skating show in December to warm your heart with a nip of winter chill.
